What is the Arudha Lagna?
In Jaimini astrology every house has an Arudha pada, its reflection in the world: not what a part of life is, but how it appears to others. The pada of the 1st house, the Arudha Lagna (AL), shows your image: how people see you, your status and reputation. The pada of the 12th house, the Upapada (UL), is read for marriage.
How the padas are calculated
- From a house, count the signs to where that house's lord sits.
- Count the same number again from the lord. The sign you reach is the Arudha pada.
- If that lands on the house itself, or the 7th from it, the 10th sign from there is taken instead.
- For Scorpio and Aquarius, which have two lords, the stronger lord is used.
The padas most often read
- AL (1st): your public image and standing.
- A7 (7th, Darapada): partners and business dealings as they appear.
- A10 (10th): your career as the world sees it.
- UL (12th, Upapada): the marriage and the spouse.
