Kundli matching by date of birth, explained
Kundli matching (Kundli Milan) compares two birth charts before marriage. The best-known part of it is Ashtakoot Guna Milan: eight tests of the two Moon signs and birth stars (nakshatras), worth 36 points in all. The calculator above casts both charts from the Swiss Ephemeris under the Lahiri ayanamsa, scores all eight kootas, and checks both of you for Manglik dosha.
The 36 gunas: what each koota tests
| Koota | Points | What it compares |
|---|---|---|
| Varna | 1 | Outlook and temperament in work and duty, from the Moon signs' element groups. |
| Vashya | 2 | Mutual attraction and influence: which of you draws the other. |
| Tara | 3 | The birth stars counted from each other: fortune and wellbeing you bring each other. |
| Yoni | 4 | Physical and instinctive compatibility, from the animal symbol of each nakshatra. |
| Graha Maitri | 5 | Friendship between the lords of the two Moon signs: how your minds get on. |
| Gana | 6 | Temperament: Deva (gentle), Manushya (human) or Rakshasa (intense). |
| Bhakoot | 7 | How the two Moon signs sit from each other: family life, love and money. |
| Nadi | 8 | The nakshatras' Nadi (Adi, Madhya or Antya): traditionally read for health and children. |
How many gunas should match for marriage?
Tradition reads the total like this:
- Below 18: under the traditional minimum. Families usually ask an astrologer to look closer.
- 18 to 24: acceptable. It can work well with understanding on both sides.
- 25 to 32: a good match, traditionally a green light.
- 33 to 36: excellent, and rare.
The total is only the start. Two kootas, Nadi and Bhakoot, carry the most weight. A score of 0 in either one is called a dosha, and many astrologers look at it before they look at the total.
Nadi dosha
Nadi dosha means both of you were born in nakshatras of the same Nadi, which scores 0 out of 8. It is traditionally the most serious flag in Guna Milan. Classical texts list exceptions, for example when the two of you share a Moon sign but not a nakshatra, or share a nakshatra but in different signs. The calculator shows the score as the classical table gives it, and leaves those exceptions to be weighed by an astrologer.
Bhakoot dosha
Bhakoot dosha comes from the two Moon signs sitting 2/12, 5/9 or 6/8 from each other, which scores 0 out of 7. It is traditionally softened when the two Moon signs share a lord, or their lords are friends.
Manglik dosha in matching
A Manglik chart has Mars in one of the houses tradition links with marriage. For matching, the calculator uses the wider rule of six houses (the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th and 12th) and checks both of you from the Lagna and the Moon. Tradition says a Manglik is best matched with another Manglik, when the dosha is said to cancel out. To see how strong one chart's Mars is and what reduces it, use the Manglik dosha calculator.
Why the birth time matters
The Moon changes nakshatra roughly once a day, so most of the 36 points come out the same for any time on a given date. But on a day the Moon changes sign or nakshatra, the time decides which side of the line it falls, and the Lagna, which the Manglik check uses, moves about one sign every two hours. Use the time on the birth certificate where you can.
Guna Milan is a traditional practice, not a prediction. A high score does not promise a happy marriage and a low one does not doom it. Respect, communication and shared values matter more than any chart.
Questions people ask
Is this kundli matching free?
Yes. The 36-point Guna Milan, all eight kootas and the Manglik check for both of you are free, with no sign-in. Signing in free lets you save a match and read your own chart; the detailed written reading of a match is a paid add-on.
How many gunas are required for marriage?
Traditionally at least 18 of 36. 18 to 24 is acceptable, 25 to 32 good and 33 or more excellent. Nadi and Bhakoot dosha are looked at separately from the total.
What is Nadi dosha?
Nadi dosha is when both people's birth stars belong to the same Nadi, which scores 0 of the 8 Nadi points. It is traditionally the most serious flag in Guna Milan, and classical texts list exceptions an astrologer weighs.
Can I match kundli without the exact birth time?
Mostly, yes: Guna Milan is read from the Moon, which moves slowly. But on a day the Moon changes sign or nakshatra the time decides the result, and the Manglik check from the Lagna needs an accurate time.
Does a low guna score mean the marriage will fail?
No. Guna Milan is a traditional guide, not a prediction. Many couples with a low score have strong marriages, and a high score promises nothing on its own.
