What are the Chara karakas?
In Jaimini astrology, seven planets take on seven roles in your life, called the Chara (moving) karakas. Unlike fixed significators, they change from chart to chart: each planet's role depends on how far it has travelled through its sign, whatever the sign.
How the atmakaraka is found
Take the degree of each of the seven planets from the Sun to Saturn within its own sign. The planet with the highest degree is the Atmakaraka, the next is the Amatyakaraka, and so on down to the planet with the lowest degree, the Darakaraka. This calculator uses the seven-karaka scheme; some astrologers add Rahu, counted backwards, for an eighth (Pitrikaraka).
The seven karakas
- Atmakaraka (AK): the soul, the main lesson of your life. Its navamsa sign is the Karakamsa.
- Amatyakaraka (AmK): career and the work you are meant for.
- Bhratrikaraka (BK): siblings, courage and guides.
- Matrikaraka (MK): mother, home and education.
- Putrakaraka (PK): children and creativity.
- Gnatikaraka (GK): rivals, obstacles and tests.
- Darakaraka (DK): the spouse and partnerships.
When two planets have almost the same degree, the karakas depend on the exact birth time: check both planets' minutes in the table. See the karakas with Arudha padas and Chara dasha in our Jaimini chapter.
